USP’S OF A MICRO MARKET

posted in: Tips & Tricks | by: Olid Uddin

This article explores some USP’S of a micro market over a traditional canteen set-up by focusing on three important factors; PROCESS, STAFFING AND TIME. There are multiple variables that go into the decision-making process to pick vendors, including prices, services, features and integrations.

With the advancements in technology and quest for efficiency, In the near future, we envisage one of the key decisions for a company looking for a catering solution for their staff, is to decide whether they are going to use a traditional managed-service or a self-service platform. Whilst many companies may not be aware of a self-service canteen, the concept itself has now been around for many years in everyday business use i.e. automated emails, CRM systems, logistics.

There are some important considerations that need to be considered in order to make the shift work. We have narrowed it down to the following, which we call PST!

PROCESS

In a managed-service, a common process will be the traditional canteen set-up with the employee requesting their order directly to the canteen staff and making payment. In a self-service environment, the process is very much in the hands of the employee, with no other human interference to picking their snack, scanning and paying! A familiar set-up is that of a self-checkout system at any one of the major supermarket outlets.

STAFFING

Perhaps the principal and financial difference between a managed service and self-service is the latter process of a checkout requires no staff. Everything is designed for this very reason of excluding any labour. Of course for our Deli Cafe, we provide our own dedicated staff member on standby that stocks the café and will be around during peak times for assistance.

TIME

The biggest draw of a self-service solution is the operational times – the concept is 24/7! Many work sites can run 24 hours a day but the traditional canteen solution are only operational during 9-5. Thus providing the need for that vital gap. If the need was to lower costs, moving from a costly managed-service to a feasible micro market is certainly a step in the right direction!
